Sanduk (jewelry box)

  • From Egypt to Pittsburgh Home
  • Agnin En Tankult (jewelry basket)
  • Aghaiz Nesalhat (fertility necklace)
  • Sanduk (jewelry box)
  • Zrabin (women’s bridal shoes)
  • Snapshots of Siwa
  1. Palm decoration
The image on the front is a date palm, which reflects the natural world around Siwa.
  2. Original writing
This writing is left from this box’s original purpose. “B.O.P. Fannings” stands for “broken orange pekoe fannings,” a kind of loose-leaf tea.
  3. Red coloring
When you see a red chest in Siwa, you know a wedding is near. These wedding chests are given to a bride by her father, to remind her of home.

Wood, paint, steel, copper

Accession # 37596-16

Have you ever creatively reused something for a new purpose? Jewelry boxes like this were often made from wooden crates and similar items left behind from the two world wars.
